Getting to Know You 2 With MSWB

Mississippi Women Bloggers

So today, Mississippi Women Bloggers is doing another “Getting to Know You” link up! These are a lot of fun and a good way for all of us to get to know each other, especially since our list of bloggers has grown so much lately, which is awesome! In case you missed the first one, my responses to that one are here. Without further adieu…

1.  What is your favorite thing to do in your hometown? Which one? In Oxford, I like to catch up with family and check out the shops on the Square. Probably one of my favorite things in Laurel, where we live now, is when the fair comes to town. Which will be soon! Can’t wait to see what already fattening food the fair folks will be frying up this year.

2. What is the best vacation spot in Mississippi? I would say Natchez is a great one. We go (almost) every year around our anniversary for a long weekend (that happens to coincide with a continuing legal education course at Dunleith Plantation – my husband and I are both lawyers – no we don’t actually argue that much, yes I’ve heard all the lawyer jokes).

3. Tell us about the most fun date night idea in Mississippi. I just keep thinking back to before we got married, when we were in law school. We were at Taylor Grocery every weekend. We weren’t regulars, we were fixtures. There was a reason for that. Good food, good people, good music. (That was back when a band called “The NEDRECKS” played most weekends.) Those were fun date nights.

4.  What is one fun fact that very few people know about you? Well, I thought of one, but my husband says I can’t tell that one. Party pooper.

5.  Who is your favorite sports team (if you have one) and how did it start?
This is a loaded question, at least when it comes to college football. See this post
NFL? Saints. (But I also like to follow the Mannings and some former Ole Miss and Auburn players).
MLB? Braves.

6.  What are your top three “Best Eats” in Mississippi? Well, since Davie’s in Montrose closed (which was just the saddest thing ever), I’d have to say:
Taylor Grocery in Taylor
Cowboy Jim’s in Lone Star
The Castle Restaurant and Pub (at Dunleith) in Natchez. (Honestly, we usually eat downstairs at the bar. They will bring you any of the menu items down there. Plus, they make some amazing Gouda fries. Yes, you read that right. Gouda. Fries.)

7.  Where do you see yourself in 5 years? One of two ways:

a.) Terribly depressed. I will be 40 in five years. I didn’t handle 30 very well, which I didn’t actually see coming until the first time after that birthday that I had to fill out a form with my age on it. I didn’t like the “3” in front. It looked strange. Then it felt strange. I’m ok with it now (sort of), probably only because I’ve had a few years to get used to it, but the “4”? That might send me over the edge.

or

b.) Terribly happy. Because it finally sank in that age is just a number and I will have lived the last five years to the fullest and have lots to show for it.

8.  If you could choose an actress to play you in real life, who would you choose and why?
People used to tell me I looked a little like Geena Davis, and if I were being realistic, that would probably be a good choice.

If I’m just being vain, I choose Olivia Wilde. She’s just stupid pretty.

I can totally make my hair look like Olivia’s in this picture, however. Easily. It’s a hot mess sometimes.

9.  What is a southern tradition you and your family have?

The first Saturday in December is always Kiwanis Pancake Day and Christmas Parade day in Laurel. My husband is involved with Kiwanis and ends up cooking pancakes all day long while I take the kids to the parade. Then, when he’s done, we all head out to the tree farm to pick a Christmas tree. The kids (including hubs) run around amongst the trees, hiding from each other and then chasing each other down. At some point we have to actually choose a tree. There have been years when this took hours. There have been a few when it took 30 seconds. Just depends on what mood everyone is in.

10.  List 5 things on your Bucket List you hope to do before you die.

I really had to think about this one.

Write a book.
Take my daughter to Paris.
Host Christmas dinner.
Re-learn to play the guitar.
See the Pacific Ocean.

So that’s it. Looking forward to learning more about all of the women of MSWB!
