I got an award!

So today, I got a message from Leslie over at Tally Tales that I had been nominated for a Liebster Award! Thanks, Leslie! I didn’t even know what this was, but sure was happy to get it once I figured it out!

Please go check out Tally Tales. I’ve really enjoyed it and I think you will, too.

So what is a Liebster Award, you ask? I asked the same thing. (Sorry, blogger community, for being so out of the loop.)
Answer: The Liebster Award is given to up and coming bloggers who have less than 200 followers.
And it’s a “pay it forward” kind of thing, which is cool.

So here are the rules, as I’m told:
1. Link back to the blog that nominated me. (Scroll back up.)
2. Nominate 5-11 blogs with fewer than 200 followers. (Scroll to the bottom.)
3. Answer the questions posted for you by your nominator. (Just below.)
4. Share 11 random facts about yourself. (Uh oh.)
5. Create 11 questions for your nominees. (Hmm…)
6. Contact your nominees by commenting on their blog or sending them an email to communicate the nomination.

Readers, get ready, because you are fixin’ to learn some stuff about me. Here we go!
Questions from Leslie:

1. Where is your favorite place to visit?

That is a difficult question to answer, only because there are a few, and narrowing them down to one is difficult. I will list my three favorites, with my very favorite (as of today, one of the others could come out on top tomorrow) last. One is Oxford, Mississippi. I have family there, including my parents, and went to college and law school there. There’s just nowhere on earth quite like it. From the Grove on game day to the best fried catfish in the world (found at Taylor Grocery), from the square to my parent’s home (there’s nothin’ like your mama’s house), a return to Oxford is just good for my soul. On the other hand, if I were to base the answer to question on the place I visit most, it would probably be New Orleans. My husband and I spent part of our honeymoon in New Orleans and we return there fairly regularly for food and fun with friends. But right now, probably because I have just recently returned from it, my favorite place to visit is San Pedro, Belize. I could go on and on about it, but you can read about it here and here. Bottom line, while it’s no utopia, it’s a quirky, friendly place that I find endearing and addictive.

2. How do you like to spend a Saturday morning?

Unscheduled. I like to sleep in, then have nothing that I absolutely have to do. Eat breakfast, then find a project of some sort to work on or spend the day doing something fun with the kids.

3. What is your favorite memory?

Here goes:

Once, when I was a kid, my parents and I were traveling home from visiting my grandparents over Christmas. We stopped, about two and a half hours from home, to visit some friends we met during the summer camping at a state park. We stayed for a few hours and had some fun, and I remember that we shot fireworks that evening, then headed for home. I kept thinking I smelled a dog, but figured it was just because we had been playing with our friends’ dogs. Then, about an hour from home, I happened to turn around, and there, on the back seat of our van, was their dog. Just chillin’. I really didn’t know what to say or do at this point. My parents, in the front, had no clue. So I said, “Mom, am I dreaming or is there a dog in the backseat?”

Before turning around, she laughed, thinking I was playing some kind of trick on her, then turned around, and her eyes got big. “I thought you were kidding!” she said. “There really is a dog in the backseat!”

My dad, who was driving, said, “Huh?”
“A dog, Dad. In the backseat.”
He glanced in the rearview mirror. “Yeah, but why? And where did it come from?”
“It’s Sunny’s dog. I guess we left the van door open while we were shooting fireworks and it jumped in because of the noise. Oh, and by the way, it ate the leftover Christmas ham apparently.”
(Seems silly, I know. You were probably expecting a really weighty answer to that question, like the birth of my child, or my wedding day. I treasure those, of course, but I think what I treasure most are memories that make me laugh. That one does it every time.)

4. Why did you start blogging?

This time around, because God told me I should. I already knew that, but He gave me a shove.

If any of you reading this don’t understand or don’t have any experience with communication with a higher power, I really am so very sorry. I hope that you will follow along on this journey. I don’t know where we’re going exactly, but I’m excited to see what happens when I really let go and let Him lead. So join me so He can show you, too.

On the other hand, those of you who know exactly what I mean, y’all (yes, I’m very Southern) please join me, too.  I’ll take all the company I can get.

5. Coffee or not? If so, what kind?

Yes. Strong.

6. What is your favorite book?

Again, there are so many that I love. In an effort to be decisive, I’ll pick one, though. Anna Karenina.

7. As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? Did that dream become reality?

I waffled between a few different career goals when I was young, but I always seemed to come back around to the idea of going to law school and becoming some sort of lawyer. I did that, and I’m glad I did. I am currently in the legal field, but have at times departed from it to do other things. Spent some time in journalism, which really got me hooked on writing. And not legal writing. Although I enjoy legal writing within my career, it does not really allow for the same kind of expression as other kinds of writing.

My husband is also a lawyer. We’ve heard every lawyer joke that has ever been told. I promise.

8. Are you a pet-lover? If so, how many pets (and what kind) do you have?

Yes, I love animals. Currently, I have one dog, a Pekingese named Rudy who will be 15 years old on August 22. (Does the fact that I know his birthday tell you anything about his place within the household?)

9. What is your favorite TV show?

Again with the making me be decisive. Downton Abbey. (Sorry, can’t help also mentioning Grey’s Anatomy. And The Voice.)

10. Winter or summer?

Winter. Which is why it’s so funny that I am so in love with Belize.

11. Share a great bit of advice you have received at some point in your life.

Don’t leave van doors open when shooting fire works.

Eleven Random Facts About Me:

1. I play, with varying degrees of skill, the oboe, the piano, the flute, the trumpet, and (just a tad because my kids take lessons) the violin.
2. I hate revolving doors. I am terrified that I will get stuck or injured in one.
3. I picked up some graphic design skills while working for a newspaper, and now it’s my favorite hobby. Few things are more exciting than being asked to design a brochure, an invitation, or a Christmas card for someone.
4. I am a huge Auburn fan (because I grew up there). War Eagle!
5. I am a huge Ole Miss fan (because I went to school there). Hotty Toddy!
6. I probably just lost a bunch of readers because of #4 and #5.
7. The majority of my wardrobe is black. It’s classy, it all matches, and my husband says I look good in it. The fashion experts who urge all this experimentation with color will just have to get over it.
8. As a kid, I was a spelling bee champ.
9. Through my husband, my kids are the great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandkids of Pocahontas. (Ok, so that’s not about me, but I think it’s cool.)
10. I love photography and occasionally do some mixed media artwork, both of which I have sold in local charity auctions (to some poor souls who took pity on me, most likely).
11. I love the smell of boat exhaust. It reminds me of summers at the lake growing up.

(Note to Leslie: On your list, I share numbers 4, 5, 6, and 10.)
